BEES! The Colony by Artizani

A white wooden beehive. A young girl with brown hair and purple top is looking inside the beehive.

A logo that reads AROUND THE LAKE FESTIVAL in black capital letters. In the top left corner is an orange semi-circle shape. In the top right corner is a blue rectangle. In the bottom left corner is an orange triangle with a yellow squiggly line. In the bottom right corner is a pink square with a circle filled with black dots.

The Bees is an installation of multiple beautifully hand-made hives with copper roofs and corners. Each one hides a unique, unexpected interior world. Some use high-spec digital technology – others rely on more traditional means.

Audiences wander amongst the honey-perfumed Bee colony, occasionally cloaked in smoke, finding a variety ways of viewing and interacting with the contents. In each there is a surprising conceptual twist that challenges, charms and confounds expectations – you may find yourself looking into the vastness of space, or teased by a telescopic hive soaring into the air.

The Bees is created by Artizani. Presented in Crawley at Around The Lake Festival by Creative Playground, with support from Without Walls.

This is a FREE event, no need to book.

Times: 1-2.30pm & 3.30-5pm

Community Engagement

We are collaborating with Artizani and local arts group Community Creations to design and produce a hive to add to the colony, inspired by Crawley. The new hive will be part of the installation at Around The Lake Festival.

About Artizani

Artizani started in 1989 with an old Ford Escort van and a vision of making performances on the streets. 30+ years later they are still doing it, using all the lessons they learnt on the way (although the van died in 1994).

Since then they have won awards, been commissioned multiple times, secured ACE funding for several projects and toured all over the world and to most of the UK’s towns and cities.

Artizani are experts in creating outdoor arts, time-served specialists in the form – they don’t just put art on the streets, we make art for the streets. Public space can be a challenging environment in which to perform and every street, square and park is unique. That is why they make shows that are flexible, respond to the space they are in and engage with the audiences we find there. And they are not put off by a few drops of rain!
